SpecialitySession Sponsor

The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) is a regional, non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing marine and coastal science across the Western Indian Ocean. Established in 1993 and headquartered in Zanzibar, WIOMSA brings together scientists, practitioners, institutions, and policymakers working to support the sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems.

Operating across countries including South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, and island states in the region, WIOMSA promotes interdisciplinary research, capacity development, and knowledge exchange to address key ocean challenges. Its work focuses on strengthening the scientific evidence base for decision-making, supporting policy development, and enhancing regional cooperation in marine and coastal management.

Through programmes such as research grants, training initiatives, and its flagship scientific symposium, WIOMSA plays a central role in building expertise and fostering collaboration across the region. By bridging science, policy, and practice, the organisation contributes to the sustainable use and conservation of marine resources, supporting both environmental resilience and socio-economic development.
