Over the last 25 years Lance has occupied different positions in the private sector, civil society and government. From 2004 to 2015 he was a Member of Parliament serving on various portfolio committees, with energy, the environment and the economy being his major focus. Since 2015 he has served as a director in the City of Cape Town, heading up the Enterprise and Investment department. Lance also sits on a number of boards, including Wesgro, the Western Cape Economic Development Partnership, BlueCape, the Atlantis SEZ and the Bulungula Incubator.
